Headline: In Search of a Gender Sensitive Food Policy
Description: Victor Bwire, The Nation (Nairobi): Women in Kenya are on a new initiative to lobby for the formulation of a gender sensitive national policy on agriculture, food security and nutrition. The initiative comes in the wake of reports that more than three million people are currently starving due to insufficient supplies of food, limited access to available food and poor feeding habits. These failings have been attributed to the marginalisation of women in agriculture by policy planners. Prof Julia Gitobu, who says national efforts to improve food security must be given a gender face . The women, operating under the banner of the National Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Gender, are worried that without a revision of the current national agricultural and livestock extension policy to include food nutrition and gender concerns, the recurring food insecurity will never be overcome.
