Headline: Experts call for review of food policies
Description: Over-reliance on maize and agricultural policies that favour cash crops are largely to blame for the current food crisis, a report on food security in Kenya says.

In addition, the marginalisation at the policy formulation level of women who produce about 70 per cent of the food for home use has also been blamed for the precarious food situation.

Another factor is the relegation of traditional crops in preference for cash crops and maize, leading to worsening nutritional levels among the poor.

The report was formally launched on Thursday at a Nairobi hotel by food security experts from Winrock International, the ministries of Agriculture, Livestock Development, Health, the University of Nairobi and the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute. The team formed a working group to promote the integration of nutrition in agriculture and related policies and recommend the solutions to food insecurity, poverty and malnutrition in Kenya.

The team made recommendations after carrying out several surveys in the country. The launch particularly targeted members of the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association, many of whom participated in the launch.
